offhand photos

I've been really enamored lately with the position of people's arms, especially their hands. Hands and arms seem to have so much personality and life, and are usually very expressive. Also, in keeping more in tune with my other work, hands and arms are really terrific as graphic forms. They can be moved easily into any number of positions, many of which offer interesting contrast with surrounding forms such as people, shadows, and statues.

OFFHAND PHOTOS is a series of twenty such photos. I didn't realize until editing the work that most of these photos are from out-of-state locations or other special events, unlike my normal photography which is almost entirely local and banal. Not sure why this is exactly. I think part of it is that most of these shots depend on crowds for that critical mass of arms and hands to be in the right position, and crowds are not typically local and banal, but must be sought out.

The dictionary defines offhand as "without previous thought or preparation," a good description of these photos as well as most of my other work.
