GUERRILLA PORTRAITS is a series of strangers who happened to look into my camera for a split second, thus allowing me to capture their souls forever.

I had no connection to any of these people. In each case I saw them once in a public setting, waited until they looked at me, took their photo without saying a word, and never saw them again. Guerrilla photography.

This project is relatively recent and ongoing and I'm still trying to sort through my motives. Part of it is personal. I am a shy person and so it takes a certain resolve for me to put a camera in someone's face with no certainty how they will react. It's very confrontational, and I think confrontation is good for me sometimes. But I'm also driven by the results. I love the expression that hits someone's face the instant they realize they are being photographed, but before they can consciously react. It's very pure and confused and blank, all at once. It's amazing to me how similar the expressions are from one person to another. All different people in all different settings yet when a camera is aimed at them you get the same look. It's the sort of unguarded portrait that only occurs when a person is looking straight into the camera and a channel opens and you can see into them.

I realize this project is very objectifying. I've reinforced this by avoiding any mention of the people in the titles, just date and place. The people might as well be lampposts. I've used them, put them on a web site without permission, and have no qualms. For all my remorse I might as well be a lamppost. But I would like to offer a small token. If you or someone you know is in one of these photos, please email me and I'll send you a print. Email me and you can have your soul back. Guerrilla Portraits last update: Spring 2003
